What are BWF court specifications?
BWF court specifications are the official dimensional and structural standards set by the Badminton World Federation that define whether a hall is eligible to host sanctioned badminton tournaments and competitions.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) establishes precise court specifications that venues must meet to qualify as tournament-standard facilities. These standards ensure fair play across all sanctioned events, from regional league matches to international competitions.
A regulation BWF court measures 13.4 metres long by 6.1 metres wide for singles play, with the doubles court extending to 6.7 metres. The boundary lines must be exactly 4 centimetres wide, marked in white or yellow on the playing surface. The net divides the court at its midpoint, standing 1.7 metres high at the edges and 1.524 metres at the centre.
Clearance height is equally critical: the ceiling must extend a minimum of 9 metres above the court floor to allow for proper shuttlecock flight and player movement. Venues also require adequate space behind and around the playing area, typically 2 metres on all sides, to prevent collisions and give officials and spectators proper positioning.
Kuala Lumpur badminton halls aiming to host competitions or league tournaments must comply with these specifications. Facilities that meet BWF standards can be confirmed through inspection reports or certifications. When selecting a tournament-standard venue, these measurements form the baseline for determining whether a space is genuinely competition-ready.
