What are non-marking shoes?
Non-marking shoes are footwear with rubber or gum-rubber soles designed to avoid leaving visible scuffs or marks on indoor court surfaces.
Most indoor badminton courts in Kuala Lumpur require players to wear non-marking shoes to protect the playing surface. These shoes have soles made from light-colored rubber or gum rubber that does not leave dark marks when in contact with the court floor. Dark-marking soles, typically found on running shoes and outdoor athletic footwear, create visible scuffs that damage the appearance and integrity of wooden or synthetic court surfaces over time.
Courts enforce the non-marking requirement for practical reasons. Indoor halls invest heavily in their flooring, which costs thousands to maintain and resurface. Accumulated marks from standard athletic shoes wear down the protective finish and require frequent cleaning or refinishing. A single player wearing dark-soled shoes during peak hours can deposit enough debris to affect court condition across multiple sessions.
Non-marking shoes differ from running shoes in sole composition and hardness. Running shoes typically use darker carbon-infused rubber for durability on pavement, which transfers easily onto indoor courts. Non-marking badminton shoes use lighter, softer rubber compounds that grip without leaving residue. Many badminton-specific brands like Yonex, Victor, and Mizuno make purpose-built non-marking models, though general athletic brands also offer non-marking versions labeled for indoor use.
When booking a court at a KL badminton facility, check their footwear policy in advance. Most halls will turn away players in dark-soled shoes, and some provide loaner non-marking shoes for a small fee or deposit.
