What is racket weight classification (U rating)?

The U rating is a weight classification system stamped on badminton racket shafts that denotes the racket's mass in grams, with 2U being the heaviest and 5U the lightest.

The U rating printed on a badminton racket shaft indicates how much the entire racket weighs. Each U grade corresponds to a specific weight range in grams. A 2U racket typically falls between 90 and 94 grams, 3U between 85 and 89 grams, 4U between 80 and 84 grams, and 5U between 75 and 79 grams. Some manufacturers produce even lighter 6U or ultra-light designs below 75 grams.

Weight classification matters because it directly affects how you swing and control the racket. Heavier rackets (2U) generate more momentum and power with less effort, making them suitable for baseline players or those seeking harder smashes. Lighter rackets (4U, 5U) demand more effort to drive but offer superior maneuverability, faster racket head speed, and better control for attacking play at the net. The choice depends on your playing style, strength, and court position.

When selecting a racket, the U rating is one of the first things to check. If you are replacing strings or upgrading equipment, local pro shops in Kuala Lumpur can help you find a racket in your preferred weight class and ensure it suits your game.
