What is rally point scoring in badminton?

Rally point scoring is a system where a point is awarded to the winner of every rally, regardless of which player served, used in modern badminton matches and governed by the 21-point format.

The rally point scoring system awards a point to whoever wins each rally, regardless of who served. Under this format, matches are played to 21 points, and a player or pair must win by a margin of at least 2 points. If the score reaches 20-20 (called deuce), play continues until one side achieves a 2-point lead, which could extend to 22-20, 23-21, or beyond.

This system replaced the older serve-only scoring (also called side-out scoring), where points could only be earned by the serving side. The shift to rally point scoring made badminton matches faster and more predictable in length, which improved scheduling at courts and tournaments. It also made every rally meaningful, since losing a single exchange costs you a point regardless of whether you held serve.

For league players in Kuala Lumpur courts, understanding rally point rules is essential. The 21-point format with deuce at 20-20 applies to singles and doubles matches, though some recreational leagues may use best-of-three games to determine a match winner. The system is enforced across most competitive play, club tournaments, and organized league matches at dedicated badminton facilities throughout the city.
